National Bird
The Sisserou parrot, Amazona imperialis, found only on Dominica.
The Sisserou, or Imperial Amazon, lives in the high rainforest of the island’s mountainous interior. It is a large parrot with a deep purple head and breast and green wings, and it is the only parrot to appear on a national flag anywhere in the world.
Protection
The species is endangered. Hurricane Maria in 2017 destroyed much of its canopy habitat, and numbers have been recovering slowly since. It is protected by law, and export is prohibited.
